Midos, the Hebrew word for personality traits, connotes much more than the narrow definition of the word. In classic Jewish thought midos are a central focus in daily service of Hashem as well in our dealings with our fellow men. Midos affect all our thoughts and actions. Midos impinge on our first reactions and first impressions. Midos guide our every conversation and every interaction.
The Vilna Gaon declared that it is a persons life long duty to break his negative character traits. Such a powerful statement voiced by one of the greatest Rabbinic figures of the last two hundred years should do more than just give us pause. These striking words should lead us to seriously contemplate how we can rectify our midos.
The purpose of this publication is to offer a public forum for the discussion of midos and to offer examples and suggestions on how we can improve our midos and thereby improve our lives.
