Counting the Omer part2 vol.4, no.15
During the days between Pesach and Shavuos we observe some aspects of mourning to commemorate the passing away of the students of Rabbi Akiva during this period. However, not all the days were designated for mourning and this has raised several different customs. According to one custom the first thirty four days are mourning days, excluding the morning of the thirty fourth day. According to another custom the mourning ends with the thirty third day. Another custom designates the days after Rosh Chodesh Iyar until three days before Shavuos. Some designate the entire period for mourning. One should consult with a rabbinic authority if the need arises to change his custom from year to year.
Prohibited activities One may not marry during the period of the counting of the omer, even if he has not fulfilled the mitzvah of procreating. However, engagements are allowed. One may make a festive gathering as long as no music is played. A professional musician may play music for non Jews. One may sing without musical accompaniment. If a wedding took place on Lag Baomer, according to some opinions music is permitted at the subsequent Sheva Brachos.
One may not cut ones hair or shave. However, for health reasons it is certainly allowed. According to many opinions one may shave for reasons of business. One may trim his mustache if it interferes with ones eating.
A woman may shave her legs. In honor of a bris milah the father, mohel, and sandek may cut their hair.
One is allowed to buy new garments or new fruits and recite the shehechianu blessing doing the omer period.
