The Addition of V’sen Tal Umatar         vol.3, no. 36

On December 4th  we began adding the phrase V’sen tal umatar into the blessing Bareich Aleinu in the Shemone Esreh.  If one inadvertently forgot to say this phrase in its proper place, in most cases  he may still recite it.  The halacha regarding where to interject this phrase depends mainly on where in the recitation of Shemoneh Esreh one realized his omission.

While in Barech Aleinu: He may say it where he remembers as long as he says the words "uvareich sh’naseinu..." before he concludes the blessing. But it is better to go back to the proper place and continue the rest of the blessing from there onward.1

After Bareich Aleinu before T’ka:  He should wait to say it in Shome’ah T’filah before he says the words ki atah shomeah.2  On a fast day he should say it before the addition of Aneinu.

After Shomeah T’filah:  He may say it before R’tsei.  If he remembers after said the beginning of the blessing "Baruch atah Hashem" before the word "shomeah"  he may say lomdeini chukecha to complete the sentence and then say v’sen tal before he recites then blessing properly.3

After R’tsei: He should return to Bareich Aleinu and repeat the Shemoneh Esreh from there.
After the entire Shemoneh Esreh: He should repeat the entire Shemoneh Esreh.

If one finished Shemoneh Esreh and is not sure if he recited v’sen tal umatar he should repeat the Shemone Esreh if thirty days have not elapsed since we began saying v’sen tal umatar.  After these thirty days have elapsed he can assume he recited it.
