Laws of the Mezuza, part 2 vol.2 no.2
Fulfillment of the mitzvah of mezuza is dependent upon proper placement of each mezuza. The mezuza must be placed on the doorpost situated on the right of the doorway when one enters it. As the doorway between two rooms functions as both entry and exit, several conflicting factors exist in determining the direction of entry . The following is the order of priority for this determination.
- If the doorway separates a room which requires a mezuza from one which does not, the mezuza is placed on the doorpost situated on the right of the doorway when entering the room requiring the mezuza.
- If, as is typically the case, both rooms require the mezuza, it should be placed on the doorpost which appears on the right when one enters the inner of the two rooms. Example: A living room which can only be accessed through the main hallway - each of its doorways is regarded as an entrance to the living room, regardless of the traffic pattern. The mezuza, even for the furthermost door, is placed on the doorpost which appears on the right when one enters the living room.
- If both rooms are equally accessible from the outside, neither is perceived as innermost and the direction of the doorway is determined by its traffic pattern. If the doorway is primarily used for entry into one of the rooms, the mezuza is placed on the doorpost which appears on the right when one enters the more commonly entered room.
- If there is no dominant direction to the traffic flow between the rooms, direction of entry is determined through the greatest capacity of household function. The mezuza is placed on the doorpost which appears on the right when one enters the room serving the greater capacity of household function.
- If none of the above factors apply, the direction of entry is determined by the physical placement of the door. The mezuza is placed on the doorpost to which the door itself is attached.
