The Brochos on the Tefillin vol.1 no.3
- When donning the hand tefillin, one recites the brocha of "lehoniach tefillin" (..to don the tefillin ). This brocha is recited after the hand tefillin is positioned on his arm before tightening it to the arm. When donning the head tefillin one recites the brocha of "al mitzvas tefillin" (..the commandment of tefillin ). This brocha is recited while the tefillin is positioned Boruch shem kevod malchuso... ( Blessed is the name of his glorious kingdom...).
- One may not interrupt between the recital of the brocha on the hand tefillin and the tightening of the head tefillin. This includes refraining even from responding to any prayer being said at the time, ( one should, however, listen to the response and intend to be included in it ). One may not even wait unnecesarily, divert his mind from the tefillin, or communicate through gestures, during this time. Even in the case where no brocha is recited on the tefillin, as is customarily true on Chol Hamoed (the Intermediate Days of a holiday), one should stilll don the hand and head tefillin without interruption. However, in this case one may interrupt to answer to Kadish, Kedusha, Borchu, or any amen. After such an interruption it is appropriate to move the hand tefillin slightly out of place and reposition them before donning the head tefillin.
- If, one spoke, even unintentionally, or diverted his mind, between the donning of the hand and head tefillin, he must repeat the brocha of "lehoniach" (..to don the tefillin ) in addition to the regular brocha of "al mitzvas", before donning the head tefillin. In this case, it is appropriate to move the hand tefillin slightly out of place, repeat the brocha of "lehoniach" and restore the hand tefillin to their place, and then don the head tefillin with its respective brocha. This requirement to repeat the brocha doesn't apply where one erroneously interrupted to answer to Kaddish, or any such response.
