The Position for the Head Tefillin vol.1 no.2
- The exact position for the tefillin shel rosh ( the head tefillin ) is on the center, upper portion of the head. The "upper" portion of the head begins above the hairline, and extends to the back part of the head. Preferably one's tefillin should not extend past the anterior fontanel ( the soft area of an infant's head ). The "center" portion of the head is limited to the area past the hairline, directly above the space between the eyes.
- If one's hairline has receded, his tefillin may be placed where his hairline once existed. If one's hair extends below the hairline his tefillin must still be placed in their appropriate place ( above the roots of the hair ). If the tefillin were erroneously placed below the hairline, or outside of the area ( on the hair directly above the space ) betwen the eyes, the obligation of tefillin was not fulfilled. If one discovered that his tefillin were not in their proper place he should immediately return them to their proper position, however no bracha needs to be recited.
- The tefillin should be worn tightly around the head to avoid their slipping out of place. It is also advisable to place the tefillin slightly further back than the hairline to prevent them from slipping below the hairline.
