The Position for the Hand Tefillin vol.1 no.1
One is obligated to put tefillin ( phylacteries ) on his head and arm every day. The exact position for the tefillin shel yad ( the hand tefillin ) is on the biceps, the elevated area of the upper arm.
As roughly sketched below, there are four basic areas to the upper arm.
a. between the elbow and the biceps
b. the lower half of the biceps
c. the upper half of the biceps
d. above the biceps.Being that the tefillin must be placed completely on the biceps, the elevated area of the upper arm, areas a and d are excluded. Great care must be taken to insure that the entire tefillin box rests totally on areas b and c. According to most Halachic opinions the tefillin should be placed on area b. Preferably one should follow this opinion unless his tefillin are too large. Under all circumstances none of the tefillin box may be resting on areas a or d.
